22 September, 2017, Bengaluru: The students of IIM Bangalore’s Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) launched Vista 2017 here today with a host of events. The fest, titled ‘Imagine, Disrupt, Repeat’, is built around the idea of ‘Creative Disruption’ in the world of business and beyond.

Vista 2017 was inaugurated by Prof. G. Raghuram, Director, IIM Bangalore. Following the inauguration ceremony, Madan Padaki, Co-founder & Director of Sylvant Advisors and CEO & MD of Head Held High Services, spoke about how students can creatively disrupt poverty by creating jobs. He urged students to take a pledge to be job creators rather than job seekers. Well-known author Shiv Khera spoke of the three skills necessary for a successful career: people skills, prioritization and persuasion skills.

ICON, The Consulting Club of IIM Bangalore, in collaboration with Vista, presented Trojan Horse, a multi-stage event to test one’s ability to generate valuable insights, and stick to one’s guns in the face of intense competitive pressure. Six finalists were shortlisted from over 80 teams nationally for this case competition on strategy which entailed new market entry analysis. The participants came up with innovative ideas which were well presented and covered all aspects of the case. A team from IIM Bangalore, led by Samikshya Meher, emerged winners. The second place went to a team from ISB (Indian School of Business), led by Yatin Aggarwal.

Impetus, organized in collaboration with the WIM (Women in Management) club at IIMB, was a case study event based on the potential of women in the context of India’s corporate scenario. Participants analyzed the challenges that women face and came up with recommendations. This was a two-stage event where the top 10 teams were shortlisted for the second round. A team from ISB, led by Meenakshee Sinha, emerged winners, followed by a team from IIM Bangalore, led by Saransh Agarwal.

Smart City, organized in collaboration with the ENS (Environment and Sustainability) club at IIMB, aimed to find implementable solutions to the government’s agenda of transforming India economically through the creation of 100 smart cities. Smart cities are those cities which integrate multiple technological solutions to improve governance and the quality of life of its citizens. A team from IIM Bangalore, led by Shahina V, emerged winners, followed by a team also from IIM Bangalore, led by Anubhav Gopal.

Vista promises to generate enhanced momentum and enthusiasm as it moves into the second day of the three-day fest.

Speakers on Day 2 included Poonam Mahajan, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, national award winning actor Ashish Vidyarthi, and news anchor, authior and journalist Sagarika Ghose. At the Young Leadership Summit too, Prof. Rakesh Godhwani, from IIMB, spoke on shaping young minds.

The final rounds of several competitions were conducted on Day 2. ‘Bidwiser’, a strategy game that tested the capability of participants to think on their feet, was a huge draw. The winners were from Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Trichy – Eswaran S, Aravindh Kumar RS, Kathiravan S. ‘Data & Beyond’ demanded analytical proficiency from the participants. Mayank More and Manoj Mana from IIM Calcutta bagged the first place while Siddharth Das and Ashish Das, also from IIM Calcutta, took the second place in this  contest.

MarkGuru, the marketing competition, was won by Team ISB Mohali comprising Shaonli Nath and Andrea Dsouza. The team from IIMB, comprising Ithi Garg, Shreya Mukherjee, and Arimit Sarkar was the runners-up. 

‘Sparsh’ had young managers put themselves in the shoes of those running NGOs to counter the day-to-day challenges faced by them. Vaibhav Gupta and Harshit Agarwal from Indian School of Business (ISB) aced the event while Madhura Bhat  and Sarva Damani, also from ISB, were the runners-up.

The other finals held throughout the day were those of ‘Digibytes’, ‘Convexity Calls’, ‘Vidheyak’ and ‘Death by Rebuttal’.

‘Numero Uno’ looked for CEOs of the future amongst the participants who fought hard and long for the coveted title. There were two workshops – one on design thinking by Pensaar and the other on brand building by Kraftshala.

Two day-long events, Model United Nations by the Public Policy Club of IIMB, and tGELF Life Challenge, kept the attendees busy. The participants got to brainstorm as they took on some of the bigger challenges of industries and society. Panelists at the Corporate Conclave included K.B.S. Anand, MD & CEO of Asian Paints, Rahul Narayan, Founder of Team Indus, Raman Venkatesh, CEO – Technology & Corporate Development of Eureka Forbes. The discussion was moderated by Prof. S. Raghunath, faculty from the Strategy area at IIMB.

Fun events included ‘Around the B in 90 minutes’, ‘Comic Strip’ and ‘Wordict’. Participants and guests then flocked to ‘Unwinding Under the Moon’ where they were treated to music by ‘Dhwani’, dance by ‘Taal’,  and theatre by ‘Kaleidoscope’ – all three being IIMB’s talent clubs.

The second day ended with Corporate Conclave, a panel discussion featuring KBS Anand, MD & CEO of Asian Paints, Sheelika Ravishankar, Jedi Master – Marketing and Outreach, Team Indus, and Dr. Raman Venkatesh, CEO –Technology & Corporate Development, Eureka Forbes. They discussed the need for disruptive innovation across fields.

Day three of Vista 2017 saw the conclusion of the Model United Nations, that introduced the audience to the intricacies of diplomacy, negotiation and decision-making faced in the United Nations.

The final speaker in the Vista Speaker Series, Jessica Lynn, a transgender advocate and activist, shared her story and the struggles she faced. She spoke of her decision to undergo a sex change operation and the discrimination that she faced after.

The Young Leader Summit continued into its third day with Sravan Krishnan, an animal rights activist, addressing a packed house. His talk was followed by a panel discussion on the importance of accountability of social sector organizations. The panelists included Ganesh R, CFO of Akshaya Patra Foundation, Prof. G Raghuram, Director of IIM Bangalore, and Richa Valecha, a PGPPM student of IIM Bangalore who has been involved in several development projects globally. The panelists discussed how operational efficiency along with a public-private partnership model had helped the Foundation in setting standards in food safety in 17 years of operations. Continuing the discussion, the panelists also looked at the challenges hindering Akshaya Patra’s mission to make sure no child is deprived of education because of hunger. Talking about the need for NGOs to publish their annual reports to enhance their credibility, the discussion ended with the unveiling of ‘Illumine’, the 2016-17 annual report of the Akshaya Patra Foundation.

Numero Uno, the competition to find the best manager of the future, was won by Jyotsna Mehta of ISB Hyderabad, while Gian Marco Brizzolara, of IIM Ahmedabad was the runner-up.

Street Smart, about the valuation of mergers and acquisitions, was won by Rishab Jain, Tushar Puthussery and Yatharth Chaturvedi of ISB Hyderabad. Krupesh Shah and Shekhar Gupta of IIM Kashipur, and Raghu Ram Ambati, Rachitha S and Gouthami Nagammagari of IIM Bangalore were the joint runners-up. The candidates were judged based on their depth of understanding of the industry and the firms, the reasons for M&A, their methodology of evaluating the target/acquiring firms and ranking them in order among other things.

Milestone, an operations and strategy event, put contestants in the shoes of an operational manager and tested them with a live issue faced by a firm. Team Prim comprising Abhishek Dixit from IIM Calcutta was the winner while Team Illuminatis comprising Kunal and Bharat Balegere from IIM Bangalore was the runner-up.

The day also saw various other events including Dynamark, Milestone, Stock 20-20, Hire To conquer, Qriosity, 60 Seconds to Fame, and Optimus. Dynamark, the case competition, tested the participants on real-life marketing scenarios.

Vista ’17 had something for everyone to look forward to throughout the three days of the summit.
