October 15, 2015: IIM Bangalore’s Vikasana, in association with various student clubs at the Institute, brought together the IIMB community in a week-long celebration of the spirit of giving, through a series of new initiatives titled ‘Daan Utsav’, from October 2nd to October 8th, 2015.
The week began with ‘Twaran’, a run where over 340 participants including IIMB staff and their families, students and alumni, raised funds for ‘Omashram’, a home for the elderly. The evening was marked by a program called ‘Ullas’, with a cultural performance by ‘Sunadha’, a troupe of specially-abled children from the Samarthanam Charitable Trust.
On October 3rd, a ‘Teach to Transform’ session was conducted by IIMB students for over 60 children from the NGOs Samarthanam and Sahasra Deepika, and for children of contract workers in IIMB. A magic show by Rahul Krishnan, a life-skills session and a storytelling event kept the children engaged.
The flagship event of ‘Daan Utsav’ called ‘One Day at IIMB’ invited people to bid to spend a day at IIM Bangalore in the shoes of a student. Over 72 people, from students to entrepreneurs and software engineers to archaeologists, bid to attend lectures by IIMB professors, solve a case study and take a tour of the campus. The event was successful in generating substantial proceeds for donation to the NGOs U&I and Samiksha Foundation, working for the betterment of marginalized women, and children with cancer respectively.
The following days saw new initiatives such as ‘Sandwich Seva’, where students volunteered to make and distribute over 200 sandwiches to needy children and ‘Asha’, where over 40 students volunteered to read over 40 hours of books to blind children.
The week concluded with the fulfillment of wishes made on the ‘Make a Wish Tree’, where visitors to IIMB’s recently concluded business festival Vista had pledged to fulfill the wishes of children across multiple NGOs like Bosco and Snehasadan.
In a tightly packed calendar year for management students, ‘Samarpan’ or the Joy of Giving Week at IIM Bangalore provides an opportunity for the entire community of IIM Bangalore to make a small difference in the lives of others.
