At Independence Day event by Vikasana, 172 kids get scholarships

16 August, 2018: Vikasana, the social impact club of the students of IIM Bangalore, organized the Independence Day Scholarship Event on 15th August 2018. The event, which was held in the auditorium right after the flag hoisting ceremony, witnessed an award of scholarships worth INR 8.21 lakhs to 172 meritorious students who are children of the members of the IIMB community.

The event is organized year-on-year to provide financial assistance in terms of partial payment of the school fees of the child until Class 12. Encouragement is given to promote the education of the girl child by awarding each girl child with a scholarship amount that is marginally higher than that awarded to her male counterpart. This year, out of the 172 awardees, 94 were girls and 78 were boys.

Prof. G Raghuram, Director, IIMB, Prof M S Narasimhan, Dean, Administration, & Col. (Rtd.) Raghbir Singh, the Chief Administrative Officer of the institute graced the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Raghuram said that in the recent years there has been a seismic shift in the education system that has allowed around 95% women in the rural areas to achieve at least primary levels of education. He also highlighted the importance of educating the girl child as it eventually contributed towards women empowerment. Before distributing the certificates to the awardees, he thanked Vikasana for its commendable effort in organizing this event each year.

The certificates were handed out by the dignitaries and the event concluded with the distribution of snacks.
