PhD scholar Deepti Sharma wins third prize for co-authored paper at Doctoral colloquium hosted by Institute of Rural Management Anand

Paper titled: ‘Adjusting to Covariate Shock: Tiding the Covid-19 Waves in India’ has been co-authored with Prof. Arnab Mukherji

13 November, 2023, Bengaluru: Deepti Sharma, student of IIM Bangalore’s Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme from the Public Policy area, won the third prize in advanced research paper presentation for her co-authored paper titled, ‘Adjusting to Covariate Shock: Tiding the Covid-19 Waves in India’, at the Doctoral Colloquium on Management and Development (DOCMAD) organized by the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA). The prize includes a certificate and a cash component.

The paper has been co-authored with Prof. Arnab Mukherji, Chairperson, Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management and faculty of the Public Policy area of IIMB.

Abstract of paper: Using high-frequency longitudinal dataset, the researchers study the effect of Covid-19-induced lockdown as income shock on household finances in India. They used data on a panel data of 25,114 households captured over a span of three years to study the ex-post risk coping mechanisms. They find a larger distributional impact on households in the lower income range, the asymmetric ability of high-income households on completeness of financial market, re-optimization of consumption expenditure and increased borrowings to cope with the covariate economic shock. The macro impact of Covid-19 can be large, the study provides micro evidence of ex-post coping strategies from covariate shocks by studying the differential impact and response of vulnerable groups. The findings conform with some of the broad findings from evolving literature on the economic costs of Covid-19 and economic inequality.
