Prof. Rupa Chanda is on WHO Advisory Expert Panel

Professor Rupa Chanda, RBI Chair Professor of Economics at IIMB, has been appointed as an independent expert on the World Health Organization (WHO) expert advisory group, which evaluates the WHO Global Code of Practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel. At IIMB, she has served as a Chairperson, Internal Committee (March 2017-18), Chairperson, ESS Area (2007-11), Board Member (2008-10), Member of the Faculty Development and Evaluation Committee (2006-07, 2008-11), Chairperson, Financial Aid Committee (June 2000-March 2002), and member of various institute committees. Her research interests concern the World Trade Organization (WTO), international trade in services, regional integration, and migration.

She has also undertaken research and professional assignments for international organizations such as the  ILO, WHO, UNDP, UNCTAD, ADB, ADBI, OECD, World Bank, World Trade Institute, South Centre, IOM, Petersen Institute for International Economics and Indian organizations such as ICRIER, CUTS, CENTAD and IIFT. Moreover, she has several awards like RBI Chair Professor (Dec 2016-April 2018, Aug 2018-present), ICFAI Best Teacher Awards from the Association of Indian Management Schools (2006), and US Presidential Award for Academic Fitness amongst others to her name.

The WHO Global Code of Practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel provides ethical principles applicable to the international recruitment of health personnel that strengthens the health systems of developing countries, countries with economies in transition, and small island states. It is designed by the Member States to serve as a continuous and dynamic framework for global dialogue and cooperation. It entails facilitating and promoting international discussion and advanced cooperation on matters related to the international ethical recruitment of health personnel as part of strengthening health systems, with a focus on developing countries.
