IIMB’s Centre for Management Communication to present webinar on ‘The Role of Emotions in Communication’ by Prof. Ramya Ranganathan on April 12
Webinar seeks to explore how people can leverage emotions better during communication – be it in the workplace, in relationships, or with one’s children
26 March, 2019, Bengaluru: The Centre for Management Communication (CenComm) at IIM Bangalore will present a webinar on ‘The Role of Emotions in Communication’, on April 12 (Friday), 2019, between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm (IST), as part of its ‘CenComm Connect: The Forum for Dialogue’ initiative. Professor Ramya Ranganathan, IIMB faculty from the Organizational Behavior & Human Resources Management area, will lead the webinar.
Background of webinar: Only a subset of all the information that is made available at any moment would be picked up and processed by the human brain and this ‘selection of information’ depends on the emotional state of the person. Post selection of information the brain creates a subjective narrative to make sense of that information and the nature of this narrative interpretation also depends on the emotional state.
The job of a communicator is not only to get the ‘right information’ across to the listener(s). To be truly effective as a communicator, one needs to ensure that the listener’s brain is primed to be in an emotional state that maximizes the chances of the information being received and interpreted the way the communicator aims to. The engaging webinar seeks to explore how people can leverage emotions better during communication – be it in the workplace, in relationships, or with one’s children.
The Centre for Management Communication (CenComm) at IIMB, inaugurated in August 2017, is a unique endeavour to establish a base for research and practice in the Indian management communication space. This hitherto unserved niche in the management education segment seeks to address the needs of all its participants, including, and not limited to, students, educators, corporate practitioners, entrepreneurs and government. Within IIMB, the activities of the centre focus on the development of new courses for students, executive education and teachers, teaching aids and courseware based on existing scholarly research in communication sciences as well as fresh India-based research and practice.
‘CenComm Connect: The Forum for Dialogue’ is an initiative by CenComm, where impactful webinars are hosted on various aspects of Communications that would aid leadership in the modern business set-up.
About the speaker: Dr. Ramya Ranganathan has a B. Tech in Electronics from IIT Madras, a PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad and a PhD in Organizational Behavior from London Business School. After working in blue chip companies like ICICI, Infosys, and Citibank she quit the corporate world in 2004 to explore the fundamental question ‘Why do people work’? Her quest led her to scour the fields of psychology, philosophy, neuroscience and theology to find tools and best practices that can help the human spirit flourish at work and in life. For the last 10 years, she has been designing and teaching courses at IIM Bangalore where she invites students and executives to understand the way their mind works and use that understanding to bring joy and excellence in their work.
