The joint venture under the aegis of IOSCO aims to focus on issues relevant to the education and information needs of investors

Throughout this week, a series of webinars and panel discussions were hosted on investor education and protection. A host of eminent speakers explained the intricacies of the investment scenario in India. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Rishikesha T Krishnan, Director, IIM Bangalore. Prof. M Jayadev, Chairperson, Centre for Capital Markets and Risk Management and faculty in the Finance & Accounting area of IIMB, delivered the welcome address. The keynote address was delivered by Ravi Varanasi, Chief Business Development Officer at NSE. Given the present increase in the use of technology in the markets and its implications, Ravi Varanasi chose to bring light upon the present and future of electronic trading. As the Platform for Investors’ Education completes one year of delivering quality content on Financial Education, Dr. Aishwarya Krishna, Manager of CCMRM, presented a video on the ‘The Journey of PIE’. The presentation by Rajindra Naik, Consultant at CCMRM, discussed ‘Alternative Investment Funds’. 

The Centre for Capital Markets and Risk Management (CCMRM) at IIM Bangalore and the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) had launched the Platform for Investors’ Education (PIE) on August 14, 2020 as a platform that encompasses easily navigable, product-neutral financial literacy to assist investors.  

The World Investor Week 2021 was organized by IIM Bangalore’s Centre for Capital Markets and Risk Management (CCMRM), in association with the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), under the aegis of IOSCO, from November 22 to 28, 2021. Throughout this week, a series of webinars and panel discussions were hosted on investor education and protection. A fireside chat between Prashant Jain, Executive Director and Chief Investment Officer at HDFC Mutual Funds and Mathew Cyriac, Founder- Florintree Advisors, was organized in collaboration with Networth, the Finance Club of IIMB. The event was moderated by Prof. Venkatesh Panchapagesan, Chairperson, NSRCEL and faculty in the Finance & Accounting area. The event focussed on the mutual fund and investment landscape in India.

The conference also witnessed a number of webinars from NSE. Vikram Kothari, Managing Director at NSE Clearing Limited, spoke on: ‘Safeguarding Investors' Interest - Recent Developments in Clearing and Settlement’. Dr. Tirthankar Patnaik, Chief Economist, NSE, discussed the ‘Dynamics of the Current Macro-economic Factors in India’. With the various IPOs in place currently, Hari K, Chief Business Officer, NSE, shed light on: ‘Overview of NSE & Capital Markets-IPO’

The main theme of Investors’ Education is financial planning, budgeting, market set-up and operations, product features and risks, rights and obligations of users and providers of financial products, and dispute resolution. Badri Narayanan, Founder & CEO – EquityLevers, introduced the online viewers to the basics of investing by the process of ‘How to pick winners from quarterly result announcements’. Another workshop to understand the technical analysis of trading was organized. Vijay Prakash and Darshan Rao, authors of ‘Slumdog Investor’, explained the basics of technical analysis.

Prof. Chetan Subramanian, Dean, Faculty and faculty in the Economics & Social Sciences area, made a presentation in which he noted the dynamics of the current macro-economic scenario in India. Krishnan Ranganathan, Executive Director, NOMURA India, walked the audience through the prevalence of the crypto industry through the webinar on, Recent market developments in crypto assets and emerging financial stability concerns’.

Planning is the core of saving money. Not only is it important to save, but also to invest. Investments can be in any form: stocks and shares, mutual funds, systematic investment plans, fixed deposits, to name a few. The panel discussion on ‘The Past, Present and Future of Investment Advisories’, detailed how the number of retail investors have increased post the pandemic. This increase requires more financial advisories and their assistance. Moh Hon Meng, Co-founder of iFast Group and Chairman of iFast India Holdings Pvt. Ltd.; Karan Batra, Chief Operating Officer at Fisdom and Deepak Jain, Co-founder of FinAtoZ, were the panelists for this event. CCMRM’s Dr. Aishwarya Krishna moderated the event.
