Case Writing and Teaching Workshop held at IIMB inspires India-specific case development

The Research & Publications unit at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) organized a Case Writing and Teaching Workshop at the IIMB campus on November 29 through December 2, 2010.

Dr Ariff Kachra, Assistant Professor of Strategy and Director of India Development, and Dr Nicole Haggerty, Associate Professor, both faculty members of the Richard Ivey School of Business at The University of Western Ontario, Canada (IVEY) conducted the training over four days. The primary goal of the workshop was to introduce the processes of case writing/case teaching and inspire participants to use more cases in teaching and provide the necessary tools to begin writing cases for the Indian business context. IIMB faculty members, doctoral students and case writers actively participated in the workshop.

At the inaugural session, Professor Dinesh Kumar, Chairperson, Research & Publications at IIMB, informed the participants that as part of the research collaboration with IVEY, IIMB faculty members have already published three co-branded case studies with IVEY.

The training was much appreciated by all the participants. "The workshop gave an opportunity for the faculty at IIMB who have been using cases in their teaching so far, to reflect on how to develop their own cases. What was impressive about the workshop was the manner in which the faculty from IVEY shared their successes and failures in case writing. This allowed for some thought provoking discussions in the classroom and I believe this was the significant takeaway from the workshop", said Professor Vasanthi Srinivasan of the Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management area at IIMB.

In May 2010, IIMB and IVEY had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster and grow research collaboration between the two management schools. Being a significant milestone for both schools, this partnership builds on the complementary strengths of the institutions through multiple points of collaboration. The MoU, which was signed in Bengaluru on May 24, 2010 by Professor Pankaj Chandra, Director IIMB and Professor Carol Stephenson, Dean of the Richard Ivey School of Business, will help expand both the schools' global research network and encourage joint research and co-authorship between faculty at IIMB and IVEY with the goal of jointly publishing articles in top international academic and managerial journals.

A key element of this partnership is the development of India-specific case materials for use in business education around the world. The Case Writing and Teaching Workshop conducted by IVEY faculty members was a significant initiative towards creating the reference framework for developing successful case studies as well as imparting the skills and knowledge related to case origination, research and teaching.
