IIMB inaugurates Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management

IIMB inaugurates Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management

Bengaluru, April 3, 2009: The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) today inaugurated the one-year full-time Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP 2009-10). Designed for mid-career professionals, this new programme is an addition to the long-duration programmes offered by IIMB, and significantly enhances the range of educational opportunities at the Institute.

Delivering the inaugural address, Dr Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairman & Managing Director, Biocon India Limited and Member of the Board of Governors at IIMB, said, "The 21st century brings great challenges, especially in the context of the changing economic order. Evolving a long-term vision is a challenge for most entrepreneurs. Yet these are exciting times with burgeoning opportunities. Innovation can deliver the competitive edge, and managing innovation effectively can make the difference between success and failure."

In his welcome address to the incoming batch of students, Professor Pankaj Chandra, Director IIMB invited the participants to utilize the resources of the Institute to the fullest extent. "These are difficult times, and yet interesting times. The society is trying to find a balance between market and regulation, and seeking the dominant paradigm that would serve as an alternate model. Innovation and flexibility offer useful constructs for envisioning the future," Professor Chandra said.

Introducing the programme, Professor Malay Bhattacharyya, Chairperson EPGP said, "A unique feature of the programme is a comprehensive project wherein each participant will apply management concepts and methodologies in a real-life management problem."

Emerging markets are at the core of the EPGP, with intensive study and analysis of the context of each country achieved through experiential study tours in the BRICs countries and in Africa. This is based on the conviction that growth in the future will come from the emerging economies which require special focus and understanding.

Another distinctive feature of EPGP is the innovative approach to the syllabus and course content. For the first time, themes drawn from the realm of social sciences are being integrated into management studies in a structured manner, leading to a nuanced, multi-layered understanding of management issues. Seminars anchored by experts and practitioners in the fields of liberal arts, sociology and environment will form a significant component of the learning and pedagogy.

Students of EPGP will have access to all the resources at IIMB, including being able to choose electives and attend classes being held for other programmes offered by the Institute, such as the two year PGP, the PGSEM and PGPPM, each with special topics of study.

With diversity being a stated objective, the EPGP batch comprising 73 students includes participants with wide-ranging skills, background, exposure and experience, such that learning through peer group exchange and knowledge sharing is likely to be one of the most beneficial aspects of this programme.
