IIMB to present three impact studies at the National Smart City Mission Assessment

Featuring case studies led by Prof. Shubhabrata Das, Prof.Soudeep Deb, and Prof. Dinesh Kumar from the Decision Sciences area at IIMB
01 August, 2025, Bangalore: IIM Bangalore is the only B-school selected by the Joint Secretary of the Smart Cities Mission (SCM), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, in its unique initiative under SAAR (Smart Cities & Academia towards Action & Research) to present three thematic impact studies at the national level.
As part of the initiative titled ‘Assessment of Thematic Impact Studies conducted by reputed academic institutions’, our faculty and research teams assessed key areas within India’s Smart Cities, drawing from in-depth fieldwork, stakeholder interviews, and data-driven analysis.
Overview of the three selected papers:
The first research on ‘Smart City Mobile Applications (SCMA) & Urban Convenience’, authored by Prof. Shubhabrata Das, Decision Sciences, IIMB. This study explores how mobile apps developed under SCM are improving citizen services like tax payments, grievance redressal, certificate issuance, and real-time updates. While adoption has grown across 62 cities, the study emphasizes the need for better execution, stronger citizen awareness, and robust data security mechanisms.
The second case study, titled ‘Impact of Smart Classrooms on Education Access & Dropout Rates’ was authored by Prof. Soudeep Deb, Chairperson, Decision Sciences, IIMB, Kapil Gupta, PhD scholar, Decision Sciences area, IIMB. Analyzing data from 71 cities and deep dives in Ajmer, NDMC, and Tumakuru, this study found that smart classrooms led to a 22% increase in student enrolment. It highlights the role of teacher training, the rise of digital libraries, and the need for curriculum-sensitive tech adaptation, especially for students from economically weaker sections.
The final paper titled ‘Real-Time Tracking & Crime Reduction, Especially Against Women’, authored by Prof. Dinesh Kumar, Director In-charge, Decision Sciences, IIMB, Shailaja Grover, and Purvi Tiwari, Research Consultant, IIMB. This report assesses the impact of integrated surveillance systems in cities like Nagpur, Chennai, and Tumakuru. Findings indicate enhanced public safety, faster crime resolution, and reduced incidents of harassment, showcasing how technology can support safer, more responsive urban environments
