Addressing IIMB’s GMHE participants, Narayana Hrudayalaya’s Devi Shetty lists innovation and entrepreneurship as vital needs for India’s healthcare sector

“Close to 80% of the world’s population does not have access to health care facilities. Hence, there is a huge need and an opportunity for entrepreneurs in the health care sector, which can be the largest employment creation industry,” observed Dr Devi Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Hrudayalaya while addressing over 40 doctors, all participants of the General Management Programme for Healthcare Executives (GMHE) of IIM Bangalore, on July 07.

Highlighting the need to train youngsters in rural areas in basic medical skills, such as checking of blood pressure and blood sugar level, Dr. Shetty explained the need for innovation to create low cost but effective facilities and cited Narayana Hrudalaya’s Mysore hospital as an example. “Medicine is not just about getting ranks and having meritorious academic records. A doctor must have clinical efficiency and managerial skills,” he added.

The General Management Programme for Healthcare Executives (GMHE) is a certificate programme that has been specifically designed for high performing individuals in the healthcare domain, who are transitioning to a management and entrepreneurship role.

The current batch of 56 participants has over 40 doctors, and others working in related areas of healthcare such as diagnostics, medical analytics and IT.

IIMB provides 40 days of rigorous managerial education in four modules as part of the programme, which is led by Professors Shankar Venkatagiri and M. Jayadev.
