Sustainable economic development, while a global challenge, is also an area of particular concern for India where the growing population, an increasingly prosperous economy and affluent life styles is matched by an increasing demand for reliable energy, clean water, sanitation services, and education and economic opportunities. Most sustainable development issues call for interdisciplinary problem solving approaches and inputs from policy makers and academics and the industry. A prerequisite to improving India's ability to face the emerging sustainability challenges is to strengthen sustainability research and education efforts in its schools and institutions of higher learning.

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and the Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), invite scholars and educators from India, the US, and around the world to join us for an exchange of

  • Sustainability-related research with a special focus on India (research track)
  • Curricular developments and best practices in teaching sustainability (curricular track)

This symposium is organized as a part of the Obama Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative, under which IIM Bangalore and the Kenan-Flagler Business School have partnered together.  This symposium seeks to a) advance research that addresses sustainability concerns related to economic growth and b) develop curricular materials to for faculty teaching sustainability related courses.

The symposium will be held at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore from January 5-7, 2014. We invite abstracts for papers for the research and curricular tracks on the following topics:

  • Corporate environmental management
  • Environmental pollution
  • Management of natural resources
  • Alternative and affordable energy systems
  • Climate change
  • Environmental legislation
  • Remanufacturing
  • Reverse logistics
  • Corporate environmental reporting
  • Microfinance
  • Base of the pyramid innovations
  • Humanitarian/social entrepreneurship

While the above are suggested topics, any proposal related to the broad themes of the symposium, even if not mentioned in the above list, is welcome.

Each proposal must briefly describe the key research ideas or curricular innovations. Proposals for research abstracts should also include a brief description of the research methodology.

To facilitate the interaction between industry and academia, proposals are also invited from industry executives for a special session. For participation in this session, full papers are not required.

This conference is organized with financial support from Obama Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative grant through the US-India Educational Foundation. A limited number of travel grants may be available to paper presenters.
