'It is an era of smarter supply chain', says IBM’s Rajesh Agarwal

Rajesh Agarwal, Head, Smarter Supply Chain Analytics, IBM, speaks on 'Supply Chain Transformation in Services Procurement' at the Best Practices Exchange Meet  at IIMB on February  21.

"The first 20 years (at IBM) was the multinational era where people worked independently; then was the era of globally integrated enterprise with countries working together for a solution; and now it is the smarter supply chain era, where the dynamic of sound supply chain operations has decreased human effort," said Mr. Rajesh Agarwal, Head, Smarter Supply Chain Analytics, IBM at the 'Best Practices Exchange Meeting' at IIM Bangalore on February 21, 2014.

Explaining how advanced analytics generate sustained value for IBM and others, he spoke about the Quality Early Warning System (QEWS), used at IBM, which identifies trends before any traditional statistical process can confirm them. "This (QEWS) algorithm saved IBM approximately $10 million a year in terms of warranty savings, additional soft savings and benefits in other areas," he added.

Opening the session, Savitha H Srinivasan, Country Manager, Services Sourcing, IBM, briefly outlined 'Supply Chain Transformation in Services Procurement' at IBM. "At IBM India, we handle about $800 million in indirect sourcing space, which requires a lot of strategy and process."

In order to adapt to dynamic market conditions, where the customer expectations keep changing and the organization has to be quick to adapt and manage quick turn-around, services is about people. "Having sub-contractors as part of the organization is the key, it allows me to take fluctuations in demand, meet talent shortages and provides me with flexibility," she said.

Describing the Adaptive sourcing, she said: "Getting started on the Adaptive sourcing model is identifying the skills, working out the cost effectiveness, be cognizant of prevalent local labour laws and identify, select capable supplies."

Kiran Varhade, Senior Manager, Supply Chain Optimization at Bharat Petroleum, spoke on the effects of 'Enhancing crude oil value chain'. He said, "Supply chain optimization was formed at BPCL with a strategic intent to gain real value for the corporation by optimizing supply chain process."

Kiran Varhade, Senior Manager, BPCL, speaks on supply chain processes adopted by Bharat Petroleum at the Best Practice Exchange Meet at IIMB on February 21.

According to him, all activities are driven from a 4-month rolling plan and collaborative demand may fluctuate anytime. With the crude oil prices fluctuating and the Government's indefinite price rise at any given time, maintaining an order of supply chain itself become an issue. "In a country where only 20% crude is produced and 45% imported, there is immense pressure on the economy because of dollar rates. But, we have struck oil in great quantity in Mozambique and the exploration is on in six other countries," he explained.
