The President of the Dominican Republic Dr Leonel Fernández, accompanied by the First Lady Dr Margarita Cedeño de Fernández and a high-level business delegation visited the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) on February 1, 2011. The 30-strong delegation also included the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Economy, Planning & Development, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic in India.

The Dominican Chief of State and his entourage were welcomed by the Director of IIMB Professor Pankaj Chandra. After a brief meeting at the Director's Office and a quick tour of the campus, the dignitaries attended an interactive session with faculty members of IIMB.

The session started with a welcome address and introductory presentation on IIMB delivered by Professor Pankaj Chandra. This was followed by presentations by Professor Gopal Naik on the activities of the Centre for Public Policy (CPP) at IIMB and by Professor K Kumar, Chairperson of the NSRCEL at IIMB on the teaching, training, research activities of NSRCEL and the incubation facilities offered to entrepreneurs.

Dr Leonel Fernández said that this visit to Bengaluru, India along with some of the most successful business leaders of the Dominican Republic was an experiential tour to understand and explore the opportunities related to information technology and high tech industry. The government of the Dominican Republic has targeted a new growth trajectory, aiming to move up the value chain in the technology space and wished to facilitate private entrepreneurs to expand existing businesses and provide impetus to new start-ups. To this end, his government wanted to explore partnerships with business schools that could support the learning and development needs of businessmen and businesswomen of the Dominican Republic through structured courses and exchange programmes.

Several members of the business delegation shared their experiences setting up and growing their business organizations in the Dominican Republic, and their aspirations in contributing to the further economic growth of their country. They were unanimous in acknowledging the importance of continuous industry-academia exchange drawing on resources from across the globe to learn about new ideas and innovations and entrepreneurial trends.

Dr Leonel Fernández also evinced an interest in collaborations in the area of public administration and suggested an exchange programme for students of public policy.

As per tradition, in commemoration of his visit, the President planted a tree on the IIMB campus.
