Sandeep Misra, EPGP student at IIMB, receives Vishisht Seva Medal from the Indian Army

Sandeep Misra, EPGP student at IIMB, receives Vishisht Seva Medal from the Indian Army

Colonel Sandeep Misra (Retd), currently a student of the first batch of the Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP) at IIMB, was honoured with the Vishisht Seva Medal by Lt General Pradeep Khanna, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Command, Pune on behalf of the President of India, at a ceremony held at Pune on January 15, 2010.

As a student at IIMB, Sandeep brings with him significant experience gained during his tenure with the Indian Army, and thus represents one of the key tenets of the selection process at IIMB. Diversity is a stated objective at IIMB, and the selection of students for the various long-duration programmes offered by the Institute is based on wide-ranging skills, background, exposure and experience relevant to eligibility norms for a particular course.

Prior to enrolling at IIMB, Colonel Sandeep Misra was posted to the College of Military Engineering (CME), Pune as Chief Instructor in the Faculty of Combat Engineering. He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal for his distinguished service as Project Manager on an International Standard Artificial Rowing Channel which was being constructed at CME. This was a humungous project which involved construction of an artificial stand-alone channel of 2.2 Km in length, 145 m wide and 4 m deep. It also entailed construction of water treatment plants, water regulatory structures, civil structures and supporting infrastructure.

Colonel Misra applied innovative execution techniques, additional mobilization of resources and financial restructuring, and single-handedly turned around the project which had undergone severe cost and time overruns. Being a prestigious and highly visible project its successful completion has enabled the country to hold world-class water sporting events and regattas and has become one of the major success stories in projects implemented by the armed forces in recent times.

Colonel Misra belonged to the Corps of Engineers, Madras Sappers, 203 Engineer Regiment. He is an alumnus of the prestigious Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and has held several prestigious appointments. During his command tenure he has executed large scale operations and projects such as the construction of Anti-Infiltration Fence along the LoC, and led the Task Force for Tsunami Relief Operations in Sri Lanka as well as Nicobar Islands.

Seeking to grow academically and take on bigger challenges and explore new vistas, Colonel Misra took premature retirement from the Indian Army in March 2009 to pursue an Executive MBA and joined the EPGP at IIMB in April 2009. In his own words, this high achiever now wants to move on from his role of "Protecting the Nation" to "Building the Nation" and has set his sights on making a mark in the infrastructure sector.
