IIMB marks Kannada Rajyotsava with a tribute to Karnataka’s rich heritage

Filmmaker Dr. Rajendra Singh Babu addresses the IIMB community

25 November, 2025, Bengaluru: IIM Bangalore celebrated Kannada Rajyotsava with enthusiasm and pride, paying rich tributes to Karnataka’s vibrant culture, crafts, cuisine, cinema, and, above all, its literature, art, and music. Professor M. Jayadev, Dean (Administration), set the tone for the celebrations with a heartfelt homage to the State’s luminaries and legends. He urged the audience to learn its beautiful language, explore its rich literary heritage, and enjoy its soulful music. He also made special mention of M. S. Sriram, Professor of Public Policy at IIMB, who has been honoured, multiple times, by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, the premier body for Kannada literature.

Prof. U. Dinesh Kumar, Director In-charge, shared his love for the songs of Purandara Dasa, the saint-poet of the Haridasa movement, noting that the contributions of such great personalities have enriched humanity itself.

In his address as Chief Guest, renowned filmmaker Dr. Rajendra Singh Babu spoke of the deep connection between Kannada cinema and Kannada literature, and highlighted the importance of management skills in filmmaking.

Representing the Board of Governors, Shri M. D. Ranganath felicitated the Chief Guest and congratulated the Staff Recreation Committee (SRC) and the Institute for introducing students from across India to the vibrant culture of Karnataka through such events.

The programme featured performances including kamsale -- a traditional folk art form of Karnataka which is performed with cymbals (also called kamsale) made of bell metal and known for its rhythmic dance, music, and devotional chanting, yakshagana – Karnataka’s traditional theatre art form known for colourful costumes and elaborate headgear, music, dance, dialogue, and storytelling in a distinct style, and more, adding colour and energy to the celebrations.
