CCGC at IIM Bangalore hosts a special talk on ‘Corporate Governance in Listed Companies in India: A Regulator’s Perspective’

Dr. V.R. Narasimhan, Chief Regulator, National Stock Exchange of India, addresses students

09 June, 2017, Bengaluru: The Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship (CCGC) at IIM Bangalore hosted a talk on ‘Corporate Governance in Listed Companies in India: A Regulator’s Perspective’ featuring Dr. V.R. Narasimhan, Chief Regulator, National Stock Exchange of India, today.

Setting the context of the talk by explaining the emergence of corporate governance in business and the growing role of regulatory bodies like SEBI, NSE and others, Prof. M. Jayadev, faculty in the Finance and Accounting area at IIM Bangalore, said: “In spite of all these developments, norms are violated. Investors’ money is not the issue but investing the money in good securities or good companies is the issue. Availability of resources are plenty but channelization of the resources is not taking place.”

Taking a cue from Prof. Jayadev’s address, Dr. V.R. Narasimhan shared examples of how companies violated governance norms and listed various type of actions taken by regulatory bodies and highlighted the objective of corporate governance. He explained, in detail, the procedures and practices that need to be followed by the corporate world to ensure transparency and maximize value of the stakeholders, which, he remarked, would in turn help the company gain greater people’s trust.

The Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship at IIM Bangalore was inaugurated in 2003 by Judge Mervyn King of South Africa and was among the first to be accredited as a National Centre of Excellence by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India. The Centre is engaged in Research, Training, Teaching and Advocacy, in the field of Governance, Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility and all the crucial components of business strategy that lead to long-term growth and sustainability. The Centre organizes regular talks by experts under its  Leaderspeak series.
