‘Cooperative & operative federalism is the way ahead in politics’: Derek O' Brien
September 22, 2016, Bengaluru: “Young people entering the field of politics is great news. But it is not necessary for them to join any party; what is important is forming opinions and providing opportunities,” remarked Derek O' Brien, Member of Parliament and widely popular quiz master, in the first talk of the Speaker Series after inaugurating IIM Bangalore’s annual business summit Vista, here today.
The MP whose talk revolved around “P, Q, R & S”, touched upon Politics & Parliament, Quizzing, Relationships and Singur. Observing that the ground rules that work for quizzing are the same that work in Parliament, he explained: “Research has to be solid, which has to be backed by interpretation, which in turn needs to be presented in a memorable way.”
He also spoke at length about Relationships, chosen for R. “When you cut everything out – skill, luck, timing, hard work, research, etc. – the vital element is relationship. If relationship is not there then people do not engage with you. Also, remember that relationship is not about give and take but about give and give and building up trust.”
Tackling a volley of questions from the young audience, he said: “A dream course, a dream job and living out all your dreams is fine but you have to open your eyes, your mind and your hearts.”
