The inaugural batch consisted of 68 participants selected from across the country
12 May, 2026, Bengaluru: The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at IIM Bangalore launched a certificate programme in Economics and Data Science (ECODS) for students in grade XII from 27th to 30th April 2026. From the large number of applicants, 68 participants were selected for the inaugural batch from across India and from various boards.
The Programme Director, Prof. Sushanta K Mishra, Chairperson, CTL, and Prof. Mukta Kulkarni, Dean Programmes, inaugurated the four-day residential programme and welcomed one of the youngest cohorts to the IIMB campus.
Prof. Manaswani Bhalla, Chairperson, PGP & PGPBA, spearheaded the Economics sessions introducing concepts with real-life examples, discussions and demonstrations. The students were immersed in topics such as theories of choice, micro and macroeconomics, the concept of rationality, market equilibrium and pricing. The applications and effects of these theories in real life and in various market scenarios were highlighted with examples across domains. The students were given a case study to discuss and analyse to apply the learnings from the sessions. The sessions on game theory especially inspired the students.
Prof. Soudeep Deb, Chairperson, Decision Sciences area, led sessions on Data Science. In a workshop model of learning, Prof. Deb integrated core concepts of data science and led the cohort in hands-on applications of concepts like probability, data collection and the role of data-led decision-making. Participants worked in small groups on research problems of their choice, engaging closely with Prof. Deb over the four days to design questionnaires, administer them, and analyze the resulting data using the theoretical frameworks introduced to them during the sessions. The Data Science sessions used Excel extensively to help students identify and understand patterns.
Prof. Haritha Saranga, Chairperson, IIMB Sustainability Taskforce and Professor of Production & Operations Management, addressed participants during a special session on Sustainability. Highlighting the human impact on global warming and climate change, she urged students to ponder on actions that impacted shared resources such as air, water, soil, etc. Speaking of the tragedy of the commons, she requested each of them to do their bit and to influence change. She ended the session showcasing IIMB’s sustainability initiatives – the green campus as well as the Institute’s water, waste and recycling initiatives.
Prof. Sushanta Mishra concluded the programme with the group presentation of students’ posters on various topics that encouraged them to look internally and explore questions on their personal growth and transitions to the future. Participants used recycled material to present their learnings and highlights of the team’s discussions in creative posters. In his closing address, he urged them to be responsible citizens of tomorrow by imbibing core positive value systems.
Ahead of the valedictory session, participants reflected on their key takeaways from the programme in an interaction with Prof. Mishra. The programme concluded with the distribution of completion certificates to all participants.
