IIMB’s Supply Chain Management Centre hosts Seventh Biennial Supply Chain Management Conference on Dec 17 & 18

Themed on ‘Post-pandemic Supply Chains: Innovations and New Paradigms’, event featured keynote addresses by Cari Shim, VP-SCM, Intel; Prof. Ananth Raman, Business Logistics, Harvard Business School; Nithin Chandra, Partner, A.T. Kearney, and Prof. Sunil Chopra, Operations Management, Kellogg School of Management

23 December, 2021, Bengaluru: The Supply Chain Management Centre, a Centre of Excellence at IIM Bangalore, hosted the Seventh Biennial Supply Chain Management Conference, from December 17 to 18, 2021.

Theme

This year’s conference, themed on ‘Post-pandemic Supply Chains: Innovations and New Paradigms’, witnessed active participation from academic researchers and industry practitioners alike.

The years 2020 and 2021 as well as the COVID crisis have demonstrated the frailty of even the best managed supply chains. Measuring supply chain performance based on efficiency, cost and customer service may be insufficient in the future. An important yardstick to measure supply chain in the current context would be its resilience and its ability to bounce back from any disruption. This year’s conference was themed in the light of recent events.

Topics

The conference covered a wide range of supply chain topics. Use of Blockchain for asset management and truck freight marketplace, intelligent supplier audit and assessment, knowledge management in a supply chain organization, analysis of CNG as alternative fuel, manufacturer encroachment in post pandemic world, role, issues and challenges with additive manufacturing, the concept of cloud kitchen, supply chain visibility and control tower, last mile dark stores for e-retail, behavioral aspects of supply chain managers, and the impact of supply chain performance on retail businesses, were some of the topics traversed during the conference.

Speakers

The conference saw marquee international speakers delivering keynote addresses. The first keynote was delivered by Cari Shim, VP-SCM, Intel, who described in detail the way Intel is reshaping its post-pandemic supply chain.

Prof. Ananth Raman, Business Logistics, Harvard Business School, spoke on ‘Teaching and Studying the Management and Impact of Operational Disruptions’ using case studies of Nissan and Airbus.

Nithin Chandra, Partner, A.T. Kearney, shared his recommendations on building resilient and future-ready supply chains, using realistic and practical solutions.

Prof. Sunil Chopra, Operations Management, Kellogg School of Management, spoke on the topic, ‘Designing Resilient Supply Chains: The Role of Industry Commons in Building Resilience at Low Cost’.

Papers

The conference had received a variety of papers from both academic scholars and industry practitioners. Twenty papers were finally shortlisted for presentation at the conference. The shortlisted authors were from business organizations such as Intel, TVS Supply Chain Solutions, TCS and HCL, and from academic institutions like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Ranchi, NITIE Mumbai, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Roorkee, UPES Dehradun, IBS Hyderabad, ABBS Bangalore, and others.

Sessions

The conference was split into four sessions: ‘Digitization, Sustainability and Knowledge Management in Supply Chains’; ‘Supply Chain Resilience and Emerging Trends’; ‘Issues and Challenges of Manufacturing Supply Chains’, and ‘Managing Upstream and Downstream Supply Chain Performance’. The sessions were chaired by IIM Bangalore faculty members: Prof. Jishnu Hazra of the Production & Operations Management area, Chief Editor, IIMB Management Review, and Chairperson, CDOCTA; Prof. B Mahadevan of the Production & Operations Management area; Prof. Tarun Jain of the Production & Operations Management area, and Prof. Ananth Krishnamurthy of the Decision Sciences area.
