Centre for Teaching and Learning hosts 11th and 12th cohorts of Doctoral Consortium on Teaching

IIMB faculty provide hands-on training to scholars transitioning into a career in teaching

17 February, 2026, Bengaluru: The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at IIM Bangalore successfully hosted the 11th and 12th cohorts of its annual flagship program, the Doctoral Consortium on Teaching.

Mukta Kulkarni, the Dean of Programmes and faculty in the OB&HRM area, IIMB, and Prof. Sushanta K Mishra, Chairperson of CTL and faculty in the OB&HRM area, IIMB, inaugurated the programme. Prof. Kulkarni addressed the participating scholars, highlighting the importance of the different initiatives by IIMB, including the Doctoral Consortium. Later, Prof. Mishra discussed the legacy of the institute and an outline of CTL and the Programme. Prof. Kulkarni, Prof. Mishra and representatives from the participants lit the ceremonial lamp during the inauguration.

The two cohorts, together, comprised 58 senior doctoral scholars from IIM Bangalore and other institutes including  IIM Ahmedabad, ISB Hyderabad, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIM Trichy, IIM Shillong, IIM Mumbai, IIM Ranchi, IIM Lucknow, IIM Raipur, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIIT Bangalore, XLRI Jamshedpur, NIT Karnataka, NIT Kurukshetra, Goa Institute of Management, Prestige Institute of Management and Research, Gwalior, University of Hyderabad, Aligarh Muslim University, Anna University Chennai, MAHE Manipal, EDII Ahmedabad, SPJIMR Mumbai, and Banaras Hindu University.

The program sought to introduce various pedagogies, thoughts, and practices helpful for scholars transitioning into a career in teaching.

Prof. Rishikesha Krishnan, Strategy area, led sessions on ‘Expectations from a New Academic’, during which he emphasized the importance of academicians being engaged scholars and thought leaders, rather than only serving as educators.

Dr. Arun Pereira, MIT-Sloan International Faculty Fellow and Emeritus Faculty at the Chaifetz School of Business, Saint Louis University, USA, conducted sessions on ‘Drivers of Learning’. He discussed the concept of teaching, referring to it as a science as well as an art. He shared anecdotes from his personal experiences as an instructor to help the participants open up to the idea of classroom teaching.

Prof. Sourav Mukherji, Dean Faculty, and Professor in the OB&HRM area, conducted sessions on ‘case-based teaching’. He threw light on the ways to tackle business dilemmas in a class while using the case teaching method.

Prof. Ananth Krishnamurthy, Decision Sciences area, discussed the key aspects of ‘classroom management’. The session, along with the teaching practicum, allowed the participants to envision the possible challenges and probable ways to tackle them efficiently. For the 11th batch, he delivered sessions on teaching quantitative subjects.

Prof. Y.L.R. Moorthy, Marketing area, discussed ‘preparations for a class’ by drawing familiar anecdotes and examples from the marketing domain.

Prof. Varun Jindal, Finance & Accounting area, demonstrated how to teach using the lecture-based methodology. He displayed a group picture of a previous Doctoral Consortium in which he participated, sharing how the programme was integral in his academic journey and inspired the participants to make maximum use of the program.

Prof. M.S. Sriram, Public Policy area, delivered the session ‘Teaching Cases: Expanding Possibilities beyond Teaching Notes’, highlighting the importance of case selection and its relevance, urging educators to prioritize the student perspective. The session came to a close with discussions on the essentials of classroom management, such as eye contact and building rapport with students.

Prof. Rahul Dé, Retd. faculty in the Information Systems area, delivered a session on ‘Enhanced Learning Experience through Technology’, touching on key areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, AI and Data Science, AI progress, Gen-AI, and Prompt Engineering and its relevance in the current academic setting.

Prof. Anil B. Suraj, Chairperson, Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and faculty in the Public Policy area, guided attendees through the essential components of fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. He touched upon key issues in the academic setting that include the proportionality of student penalties, appropriateness of monetary penalties, alternative solutions, duty of care, and constant and persistent efforts on sensitization.

Prof. Jitamitra Desai, Decision Sciences area, led a session on teaching quantitative subjects during the twelfth edition of the program. He championed the use of non-traditional engagement methods to enhance classroom interest, focusing on making quantitative concepts both engaging and relevant for students.

During sessions on ‘Course Design’ and ‘Entry to Academia’, faculty members shared their expertise on navigating the academic landscape. In the first panel, Prof. Ashis Mishra, Marketing area, Prof. Rejie George, Strategy area, and Prof. Maya Ganesh, Production and  Operations Management (POM) area, with Prof. Sushanta Mishra as moderator, examined the intricacies of elective course development. They offered practical solutions for common design challenges and spoke about the importance of ensuring that management courses remain contemporary and responsive to the dynamics of changing times.

In a series of insightful discussions moderated by Prof. Aditya Shrinivas, Economics area, faculty members shared their experiences entering the academic world. While the 11th edition panel consisted of Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Economics area, Prof. Sumit Saurav, Finance and Accounting area, and Prof. Mallika M, Marketing area, the 12th edition saw the addition of Prof. Sanket R. Patil, Economics area, to the group. They deliberated on the preparations they underwent as young academics while applying for faculty positions, balancing personal as well as professional life and advancing in academia with clarity and responsibility.

The Teaching Practicum provided participants with an opportunity to deliver sessions on their chosen topic by using one or more pedagogies discussed over the two editions of the consortium. The sessions were observed and constructive feedback was provided by senior faculty and other participating peers.

Across both batches, the cohort was split into three groups for sessions delivered by Dr. Arun Pereira, Prof. Sushanta Mishra, and Prof. Ananth Krishnamurthy, who provided tailored critiques focusing on each scholar's individual traits and instructional styles. The video recordings and feedback from the fellow scholars were provided to participants for further contemplation on areas that needed improvement. The participating scholars later opined that it helped them apply their learnings in the previous sessions and realize their strengths and weaknesses as teachers.

Prof. Mishra addressed the participants at the end of the programs and participants shared their valuable feedback. Both editions were officially concluded with a valediction ceremony.
