Burns Chair of Free and Competitive Enterprise, Professor of Business (Marketing Division), Columbia Business School. Critical challenges emerge as computers start to create campaigns, generate text, and customize experiences: Can robots comprehend human emotion and intent? Will creativity be replicated or redefined by automation? In the era of data-driven persuasion, how can we strike a compromise between privacy and personalization? What new business models and ethical frameworks need to be developed when AI becomes a co-creator to maintain customer and brand trust? Brands, platforms, and audiences are changing because of AI-driven advertising, according to new research in marketing and communication studies. Researchers have examined how machine learning improves the efficacy of advertising, how algorithmic targeting modifies the consumer decision-making process, and how automation changes the role of human creativity. Data ethics, transparency, and the changing nature of trust in the digital media ecosystem are issues that are addressed in parallel work. While AI offers unparalleled precision and scalability, it also poses serious concerns regarding fairness, authenticity, and user autonomy, according to insights from consumer behavior research and computational modelling. When combined, these questions show that the advertising industry has started to shift towards a new balance, where algorithmic reasoning and human intuition will have to coexist to yield meaningful engagement. Top experts in technology, marketing, and communication will deliberate on the accelerating change of pace at which artificial intelligence has changed the creative economy. Its effects on consumer trust, the limits of machine-led creativity, and how changing business models can ethically adjust to this new age of intelligent persuasion will all be covered in the session. The conversation will also look at how the combination of machine intelligence, behavioral insights, and data science is changing the global advertising landscape and upending traditional ideas of accountability, creativity, and authenticity. Add to Calendar 2025-11-20 05:30:00 2025-11-16 20:21:14 Research & Publications Office to host seminar on ‘Alcohol Consumption and Intimate Partner Violence: Long-Term Effects of a Temporary Alcohol Ban’ on 20 November The talk will be delivered by Prof. Arnab Basu, Cornell University 10 November, 2025, Bengaluru: The Office of Research and Publications (R&P) will host a seminar on, ‘Alcohol Consumption and Intimate Partner Violence: Long-Term Effects of a Temporary Alcohol Ban’, to be led by Prof. Arnab Basu, Cornell University (Economics area), at 4 pm on 20th November 2025, in Classroom P-22. Abstract: The research traces the impact of a partial liquor ban – from launch to reversal – on alcohol consumption and women’s experience with intimate partner violence (IPV) in Kerala, India. Decomposing the policy-induced and reversal effects by employing difference-in-differences and event-study approaches, the researchers identify a significant reduction in alcohol consumption (but only in liquor-serving bars) with an accompanying reduction in IPV during the policy period. However, both alcohol consumption and IPV rebounded to pre-ban levels after the policy removal. Heterogeneity analysis further reveals these effects to be confined only to high-wealth households. A battery of robustness tests confirm the findings. Speaker Profile: Dr. Arnab K. Basu is an Economist and Professor at the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. He holds a PhD in Economics from the Johns Hopkins University, and an MA in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, India. Dr. Basu’s primary research interests are within the area of labor markets in developing countries, the economics of eco- and social labeling, and designing lab-in-the-field experiments to elicit behavioral preferences. He is also involved in several projects that are India-specific, such as the link between indoor air pollution and child mortality, differential health (hypertension and clinical depression) reporting error amongst older adults, the effect of Kerala's partial alcohol ban on intimate partner violence, and dishonest behavior in individual and group settings. He is a research fellow at the Institute of Labor Economics in Bonn, Germany, a fellow of the Global Labor Organization, and a recent visiting scholar at the World Institute for Development Economics Research, Helsinki, Finland, and visiting professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Oxford, UK. He was awarded a research fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, and is a recipient of the Theodore W. Schultz Young Economist Prize awarded by the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE).
